Listen

The words that she speaks,
they don’t match the things she’s singing in her mind
And the smile that she keeps between her teeth
can’t hide the sadness in her eyes

She stands tall and talks loud,
does her best to walk proud,
and bites her nails when she thinks that no one’s looking
And though I don’t claim to know her well,
just one look and I can tell
There’s someone else’s skin she’d rather be in

She’s no angel
She’s no saint
She’s probably crazy,
but then who among us ain’t?
She’s the kind of troubled beauty
you’d like to take home and save
But it don’t work that way
It ain’t that easy

There’s a reason that she left the place
where everyone she knew grew up and died inside
And there’s a reason she ain’t living
the life that they all hoped she’d go and find

And in a pocket beside her heart,
she carries around the book she wrote
of all the precious reason that she’ll fail
And the truth, it seems to mean to her
Little lies come easier,
especially when you’re talking to yourself

She’s no angel
She’s no saint
She’s probably crazy,
but then who among us ain’t?
She’s the kind of troubled beauty
you’d like to take home and save
But it don’t work that way
It ain’t that easy

The city never sleeps, they say
but at certain hours, it gets a little tired
And it’s then she closes up her day,
steps into the sunrise like a careful flower

Then she follows that empty street
to the moment where the rivers meet
and thinks of all the places she ain’t gone
She says, “Being alone can be so rough,
but I think I’ve had enough
of breaking hearts, most of all my own.”

She’s no angel
She’s no saint
She’s probably crazy,
but then who among us ain’t?
She’s the kind of troubled beauty
you’d like to take home and save
But it don’t work that way
It ain’t that easy
No, it don’t work that way
It ain’t that easy
