Loving a Cowboy

Words and music copyright © Leon Chase 2012.

As performed on the album Wild Ways.

Listen

So you dreamed
about loving a cowboy
but all that you got was a drunk
with a truck and a gun

You swore you’d never be
just another broke housewife
Now you got three kids, and the trailer you live in
don’t clean itself on its own

And the sky outside don’t shine like it used to
And the flowers don’t smell the way they once did
And the nights he comes home,
you don’t feel nothing no more
But the wind in your hair,
and a pill here and there,
make the music sound pretty again

So you dreamed
about loving a cowboy
but at the end of the day, when the radio plays,
he don’t dance, at least not with you

He says he was born wild
Yeah, well so were the roaches and the snakes and the rats
And while he’s out living free, his kids all eat government cheese
and wear secondhand shoes

And the sky outside don’t shine like it used to
And the flowers don’t smell the way they once did
And the nights he comes home,
you don’t feel nothing no more
But the wind in your hair,
and a pill here and there,
make the music sound pretty again
